Volunteers from all branches of the Allied forces made up the Australian 2 Special Force Unit, which carried out a total of 284 missions during World War II. Tight, suspenseful Attack Force Z effectively dramatizes one such sortie. Five tough commandos attempt to rescue the survivors of a downed American plane on a Japanese-held island in the southwest Pacific. Their leader is Captain P.G. Kelly, played by a youthful Mel Gibson. Its Kellys first time in charge, and his fellow commandos, especially renegade Lieutenant J.A. Veitch (John Phillip Law, the cute Soviet sailor in The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!), wont let him forget it. Kelly and Veitchs conflict raises both the missions and the movies tension quotient. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, The Piano) gives a thoughtful performance as Sergeant D.J. Costello, the oldest and wisest of the troop. But the films most compelling characters are the inhabitants of the island, Chinese villagers forced to become resistance fighters to defend their way of life against the Japanese invaders. Without them, Attack Force Z wouldnt have a chance. Handsome, unflappable Lin Chan-Lang (Koo Chuan Hsiung), a martial-arts expert, is their natural leader. Even Lins children get into the act, including his brave and beautiful eldest daughter, Chien Hua (Sylvia Chang), whose presence lends the film a welcome element of romance. --Laura Mirsky

I have searched for this movie for the past three of four years to complete my moms Mel Gibson movie collection! I was ecstatic to find it not only in stock but at a reasonable price! It will make a lovely Christmas present. Momma will be thrilled. =)

As a teenager I watched this on Beta. Of course when the DVD came out I had to have this classic movie. I must say - it did not disapoint. The action was fantastic. The plot very well made. The characters completely believable. I really enjoyed watching the movie and I highly recommend it to all WW2 movie fans. A notch below saving private ryan.

A worthy addition to anyones WW2 or action movie move collection.

This was one of the first movies I remember seeing on TV when we got cable. Love the movie, very underrated. Remember seeing Mel Gibson on a talk show saying how much he didnt like making this movie, but I thank him anyways...
